tone

tone

Tone (definition).
This refers to the lightness or darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears.
Tones are created by the way light falls on a 3D object. The parts of the object on which the light is strongest are called highlights and the darker areas are called shadows. There will a range of tones in between the highlights and shadows.

Without tone Form does not exist, tone is therefore an important aspect in the visualisation of 3D objects.

in this photo  think the light is coming from directly in front of the mans head. the darker areas of the photo make his expression visible and he appears more emotional.

in this photo the light source looks as though it is coming from all around. the soft light and her facial expression make her appear more gentle and the light is more flattering than the photo above.

edward weston
for my artist research i have chosen edward weston. he is an american artist who was popular during the 40's and 50's. he is best known for his photos of natural forms and landscapes, where he uses black and white to show detail in the subject of each photo.

the photo on the left appears to be a cabbage. although the subject of the photo is very simple, the way it has been taken means that it isn't immediately obvious what the photo is of. the use of black and white in this photo means that the wide array of tones throughout the photo are shown more clearly. the tone zones in this go from 0 to around 8-9. this means all of the veins and leaves in the cabbage are visible.

the photo on the right shows a red bell pepper. the tone zones in this photo range from 10 to 0. at first glance the viewer may struggle to recognise what the photo is of. it looks as though it has been warped and twisted. it also resembles a muscle.

these photos require improvement

the photos above are ones that i would like to improve on. the one at the top, i would like to change as there isn't really an interesting subject in the photo. to improve it i would focus on the other boats and wild life that are around. the photo below, i would like to change because i managed to get why looks like another persons head in the photo which creates a blur and covers the seals that i am trying to take photos of.
