landscape

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes.

depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects giving a focused image. the further away you are from an object, the more of the photo is in focus. this is important because it determines how much of a photo is in focus which effects the quality of the photo. a shallow depth of field would be 2.8, a wide depth of field would be 22 and above.

the recommended f stop for landscape photography is f/8 to f/16.

additional equipment you could take includes, a tripod, multiple lenses with different zoom lengths and possibly some filters.

image bank

the above collection of photographs are some examples of landscape photography. some may be less possible to create than others such as the boats and the beach as they are very uncommon scenes in britain. however, photos such as skyscraper and the windmill are both easy to find in britain. this makes them potential ideas for one of my shoots.

artist research

the artist i have chosen is Ansel Adams. he has been well recognised for his experimental and impressive photography. he has been around from 1902 and although he died in 1984, his work is still being viewed today. he mostly focuses on landscapes, particularly Yosemite park in America. his photos show the landscape in black and white, which makes the tones in the landscape much more distinguished.

the photo on the left shows a mountain that has been partially blocked by a bank of clouds. Adams probably used a tripod and different filters to capture all of the tones in this photo. this photo has tones ranging from 10 (the clouds and highlights in the mountains) and 0 (the shadows on the mountains and on the ground). this photo is effective because of the the depth of field and amount of detail in the mountains.
the same can be said for the second photo, which shows the the side of a mountain with the moon in the sky. this photo also has a wide tonal range and was probably taken using the same technique of changing the filters until you achieve the desired level of detail. however with both of these photos, Ansel would've had to estimate which filter would be suitable and then potentially adjust them more using dodging and burning during editing.

photos that need improvement

this photo could be improved by using a lens hood or angling the camera differently to prevent lens flare. i could also adjust the camera settings to let in less light.

AO2- i used a nikon D7100 and a zoom lens. these photos were taken with a shutter speed of 1/125 and a range of apertures as i experimented to find which one would work best. as the lighting became poorer, i had to adjust the settings such as the ISO to increase the shutter speed and the sixe of the pixels in the shot. this allowed more light in but also meant the photos were not as sharp.

if i were to re shoot these photos again, i would choose a time where there is more daylight as my photos would be of a better quality. i would also use a tripod to eliminate camera shake.

i would improve this photo by adjusting the camera settings to let in more light and capture the landscape more clearly in the reflection on the car window.

these are some of my edits from the shoot

i believe that i have produced a strong series of images in response to ansel adams. the final images were edited to convey this photographers style. during the shoot, i travelled to different places around essex such as Stanford mount fitchett, where i found interesting landscapes which are part of the area i live in, similar to ansel adams, where he would go out and photograph different parts of the landscape he lived in.

portrait

a portrait is an artistic representation of a person which could be shown through a photo, painting, sculpture. by using the face and body language, you can create a mood of sadness, happiness, anger etc.

i chose this photo because of the expression of the man. the character played by this actor is known to be a cynical doctor with a low tolerance for other people, which is conveyed through the way he is almost frowning as if slightly impatient or agitated.

this photo was taken by yousuf karsh. to get this expression from churchil, he took away his cigar which caused anger and made Churchill appear strong and stable. this was an influential stance for a politician as it portrays the traits expected from someone who is running a country.

this photo shows Amanda Lepore. she is a transgender woman who portrays the conventional beauty standards of modern society. she is thin, white skinned with light, styled hair, perfect makeup and she bares a resemblance to Maralyn monroe, who was a very influential woman.

to maintain this glamorous look, she must spend hours on nails, hair, makeup and accessories which would also cost a large amount of money. this shows the extremes that people will go to to look and feel how they want to.

annie leibovitz

she portrays the people as strong and powerful. the young girl in this looks as though she has dirt on her face and her hair is blowing in the wind. this could represent the feeling of being in a storm. her expression in this shows her as being calm and unbothered by this which makes her appear strong. the photo on the right shows two of the x men. they look like old friends by the way they both share the same expression.

thomas ruff

in these photos the people have emotionless expressions which means you focus more on the face of the people rather than the emotion of the photo. this makes the photos more subjective

david lachapelle

this photographer uses provocative themes in his photos. the piano being on fire could symbolise how she feels careless and destructive or powerful. she could also be a musician.

Alec Soth

this photographer takes photos of normal people and shows their identity through the setting and props that they have. for example, the lady holding a photograph believes that she has seen and angel and captured it in  the photo she has.

AO3-

this photo shows a teenager who is stood with his hand on the back of his neck and is looking straight down the lens. this body language shows confidence and makes him appear self assured. his facial expression appears blase and almost disinterested, as if he has somewhere else to be. there are a few hairs out of place that drop in front of his face.

composite image making

composite image making

a composite image is an image which has been assembled using different images to create one final image.

conventional photographic techniques are used to manipulate images in ways such as layering images on top of each other, changing levels, saturation and vibrance to create muted colours. theres also dodging and burning, healing pieces of photos etc.

this image shows a ladder coming out of a body of water. this is a very surreal image and could be interpreted in different ways. this photo could have connotations of freedom and escape. this is because the ladder could represent a way of getting out or escaping from the dark hole below it. this image could also represent how you get to heaven. there could be a ladder to climb rather than a staircase. it also shows how hard it is to get to heaven as it is surrounded by water which makes it difficult to access.

Uelsmann has used digital editing to create this image. he has chosen to use black and white for this image. this could be because when you put different elements together in an image, it is harder to blend colours than black and white which means its harder to make the image look as though it hasn't been edited.

for this image we as a class used the pen tool to select the duck image and pasted it into the arctic scene, we then made it transparent so that it looked as though it was buried in the snow. we then added a shadow using the dabber tool, the pen tool to create the outline and the brush tool to fill it in with the shadow we selected from the left side of the photo.

these are images i have created using photoshop and my own images in the style of jerry Ulesmann. i thing the second photo more as the tower block blends in more with the forest than it does with the lake.

to improve the image with the lake, i could've attempted to create a reflection in the water of the building to make it blend in more.
